Spiritual Growth - The Word, Worship, Prayer, Living Generously
12 I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel,
12 Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that my circumstances have turned out for the greater progress of the gospel (NASB).
§ Greater - Greek: mallon-much more, by far
§ Progress - Greek:prokopē - advancement or progress
· The first Christian Church inEurope was founded in Philippi and established in 48-51 A.D.
· Paul was arrested in 62 A.D. and put in a Roman prison.
· While in prison, Paul wrotePhilippians, Ephesians, Colossians, Philemon.
· The theme is Joy (used 5 timesESV) and Rejoice (used 8 times ESV).
Christ -is my Contentment
Holy Spirit - His peace (vs. 7)
10 I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at length you have revived your concern for me. You were indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity. 11 Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. 12 I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. 13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
In vs. 2:8-11 Paul sets up what he was willing to sacrifice now to go after what is best.
Recap: Greater Progress: Change
Application - Choosing what is best over what we want now.
We do not need more things to “fix it,” we need Grit to apply what we have committed to.
Grit is submitting to what we have already committed to. The Bible word for Grit is Discipline.
11 Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content.
Content is not a popular word in the American Culture because, on many levels, the "Spirit of Comparison" has permeated every aspect of our culture.
The key to successfully moving from one season into the start of the next season is in the definition of content.
Content - Greek: autarkēs (adjective - a word or phrase naming an attribute, added to or grammatically related to a noun to modify or describe it.)
"sufficient for oneself, strong enough or possessing enough to need no aid or support, independent of external circumstances
We become independent of external circumstances by having Grit in our heavenly covenant! We must stay committed to our heavenly covenant.
14 Ye tit was kind of you to share my trouble. 15 And you Philippians yourselves know that in the beginning of the gospel, whenI left Macedonia, no church entered into partnership with me in giving and receiving, except you only. 16 Even in Thessalonica you sent me help for my needs once and again.17 Not thatI seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that increases to your credit. 18 I have received full payment, and more. I am well supplied, having received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent, a fragrant offering, a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God. 19 And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in ChristJesus. 20 To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.
And now, brothers and sisters, we want you to know about the grace thatGod has given the Macedonian churches. (Paul had plantedMacedonia's churches on his second missionary journey--Philippi, Thessalonica and Berea.)
2 In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. 3 For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, 4 they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the Lord’s people.
WhenPaul, being incarcerated in one of the worst prisons in the entire RomanEmpire, wrote his epistle to the Philippians. However, because he was a Roman citizen, Paul had the right to receive and send mail. Sitting alone in that dark dungeon of prison, Paul received a letter from the Church of Philippi that Epaphroditus had hand-delivered. As Paul read the letter, he quickly read that Epaphroditus had also brought a special offering that the Church of Philippi had sent to him.
In theRoman prison system, an imprisoned Roman citizen had the legal right for his friends or family to put money into a particular "account" held in his name. He could not access the money while he remained in prison, but those funds were given to him when Paul was finally released. He could have money to start his life over again.
That financial gift meant a lot more than money to Paul. It meant his friends were full of faith that he would be released and that they were putting money into his account and preparing for his release. This was faith in action that brought encouragement to Paul.
"3 ForI testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability.” What does that look like for TWBC?
Joel loves vision but is horrible about celebrating victories.

19 And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
“The word “supply” is the Greek word pleroo, which means to fulfill or to make full.”
Because the Church of Philippi was in covenant with Paul, Paul could tell them the guarantee of God’s promises to them.
He fulfills our needs according to “His riches” in glory by Christ Jesus. The word “riches” is the Greek word ploutos, which describes immense wealth or riches beyond imagination.”
The purpose of a covenant is so that we have a covering. This is why the Holy Spirit is so essential in the New Testament.
Holy Spirit is defined as Helper. John 14:16,John 14:26, John 15:26, John 16:7 all refer to Him as Helper.
Helper is Paracletos - greek: Only appears 5times in the Bible, 4 of the 5 times at the Lord’s Supper
A significant translation for Helper is Comforter.
When Jesus tells the disciples, He will send the Helper or Comforter, most people read it as "I'll make your bad day good."
Jesus was saying, "I will send the covering of the New Covenant."
A covering is there to do for you what you cannot do for yourself.
An umbrella does not stop the rain; it just stops the rain from getting on you.
A comforter on a bed does not keep it from getting cold; it keeps you warm despite the temperature.
The downfall often occurs, not because we do not have it, but because we are not under it.
We have the Covenant when Christ is in us. We get the Covering when we are in Christ.
Christ in us is legal access to salvation and eternal life. Us in Christ is access to the power of the covenant because we have brought ourselves under the Covering.
This morning is it raining on your life? Are you exercising Grit in the covenant?
Do you have the covenant?
