Learning to Yield

T

he life that the Lord has intended for the Believer is a life of victory and blessing.  For most however, life tends to be more about striving than thriving.  Today, in keeping with our Pastor’s vision to see our church experience Spiritual growth, I want to dig into this issue a little bit and offer you what I believe is God’s way to bring you to the place where you experience the life that He intended for you to live.  I think you’ll surprised how simple it really is.  I will go ahead and give you the answer up front…you must learn to yield.

Are You Trying Achieve or Receive?

Matthew 7:8

For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.

Mark 10:15

Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of Godlike a child shall not enter it.

Luke 18:17
Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it

John 16:24

Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.

Why Ask?

           Matthew 6:32-33

32 For theGentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

-If God already knows what we need, then why do we have to ask Him for it?

           James 1:5-8

5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

-Asking is sign of humility and understanding of Who the source is.

-Double-minded people are not yielded people.

           James 4:2-3

2 You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.

-Asking shows that we are yielded to the Source…if you are yielded to the Lord you will ask with His will in mind.

Receive

-Everything in the Kingdom, from salvation on, is obtained through receiving, not achieving.

-Therefore everything in the Kingdom is obtained by faith.

           -James 1:6-7

6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord.

-Many people, when asking for something from the Lord, are doing more wishing than asking.

           -Wishing is asking without faith.

Simple Doesn’t Mean Easy

-In my introduction I told you how simple the answer really was…by now I’m sure you’re thinking that this doesn’t sound simple at at.

-We like to think that when something is simple that it should be easy…let me correct your thinking on this for a moment.

-Simple means that the answer isn’t difficult to figure out.

-Easy means that it’s not hard to walk out.

-Losing weight is simple…all you have to do is operate in self-control.

-Who hear is brave enough to say that self-control is easy?

-Marriage is simple…all you have to do is put your spouse first…need I explain further.

-Raising kids is simple…all you have to do is teach them live according to the Bible.

-Having a beautiful lawn is simple…all you have to do is mow and maintain it.

-Studying your Bible is simple…all you have to do is open it up and let God speak.

-Passing a kidney stone is simple…it just has to move 2 inches.

                                   -Giving birth is simple…ok, I won’t speak that which I don’t know.

-Preparing this message was simple…you have no idea.

-Yielding to God is simple…you see where I’m going with this…the obedience factor is where the rubber meets the road.

The ‘Act’ of Yielding

-We must understand that both asking and receiving requires us being yielded to theLord.

-This where trusting Him is crucial…To the point where fear is not allowed to be a hinderance.

-Being yielded means that we ask Him for our needs and desires but leave the means by which they come up to Him.

-TheLord has never forced Himself or any of His blessings on anyone, and He never will…not even salvation.

-It All Started at Birth

           -Colossians 2:6-7

6 Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, 7 rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

-When you were born again, you did so knowing that there was nothing in and of yourself that could be worthy of such a gift…all you could do was humbly receive it.

-You‘ simply’ yielded your life to Him.

-Why then do we attempt to walk out the remainder of our life here on earth by trying to achieve the everything that comes along with it?

-The answer to receiving the abundant, victorious life is always found in how well you yield to Him and His finished work of redemption.

Galatians 3:1-14

3 O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified. 2 Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? 3 Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? 4 Did you suffer so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain? 5 Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith— 6 justas Abraham “believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”?

-What Paul was telling the Galatian church was that the life of a believer in the Kingdom is built upon receiving what we need from the from the Lord by yielding to His Holy Spirit.

-Just like we couldn’t achieve the new birth we cannot achieve the Baptism in theHoly Spirit or any other aspect of salvation, we simply accept it as an act of grace from a benevolent Father.

-We yield to His love and receive everything that He wants to pour into our lives through it.

-Until we learn to yield in the act of receiving His love we’ll never be able to yield in the act of sharing His love.

-If we fail to receive His mercy for for ourselves we will be incapable of being merciful to others.

-The same is true with all of His fruit and gifts…yielding must take place in the giving and receiving of them.

-In other words…practice on yourself. Forgiveness, patience, kindness, etc.

-Love is never forced, it must be received, or yielded to.

           -Agape

-TheGreek translation for ‘love’ as it is referred to in this study is the word ‘agape’.

-Agape is a love with no strings attached, looking for what it can give, not what it can get.

-When you love with such a pure love that you expect nothing back in return, it is impossible for you to feel hurt or let down by the response of the recipients of your love.

-This is the profound love God has for the human race, for He loved man when he was still lost in sin with no ability to love Him back.

-Humans do not have the capability to love in such a capacity.

-We must receive His Spirit and allow Him to love others through us.

                                   -1 Corinthians 13:8 (NIV)…Love never fails

-His agape love never fails.  We, however, can fail walk in it.

Who You Are is a Result of HowYielded Your Life has Been

-Your choosing to yield will determine how your life will play out.

-You can yield to the desires and weaknesses of the flesh or you can yield to His agape love.

-It really is that simple, it may not be easy.

-Receive His grace to empower you to remain yielded to Him.
